About the Dartford West Tunnel

The Dartford West Tunnel is the second of two road tunnels forming part of the Dartford Crossing on the M25 motorway. The west tunnel carries southbound traffic under the River Thames. Opened in 1963 as the original Dartford Tunnel, it was joined by the east tunnel in 1980 and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge in 1991. Together the two tunnels and the bridge form the only fixed crossing of the Thames east of London.
