About the Tyne Tunnel
The Tyne Tunnel (A19) is a road tunnel under the River Tyne connecting Jarrow in South Tyneside to Wallsend in North Tyneside. The original tunnel opened in 1967 and a second parallel tunnel was added in 2011. Managed by TT2 Limited, the tunnel carries approximately 50,000 vehicles per day and is a key route on the A19 corridor between Sunderland and Newcastle. A toll is charged for using the tunnel.
